Entrée du libre examen à l'ULB
1. The widened origin of free inquiry
- Originally, free inquiry concerned mainly the interpretation of the sacred texts in the conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
- At the end of the 18th century, the idéologues (philosophers interested in the study of ideas and of thought) extend this notion to the critical analysis of human problems in general.
- This approach is no longer centred solely on religious texts, but on every domain of life, even at the cost of conclusions that diverge from religious doctrine.
2. From an academic setting to political reach
- Although this critical thinking first developed in an intellectual setting, it begins to acquire a political reach: freely discussing human problems amounts to discussing questions of society.
- It was not yet, however, an organised political movement capable of legislating.
3. Contexte belge : révolution et compromis
-
3. The Belgian context: revolution and compromise
-
Belgium is born in 1830, following a revolt against the king of the Netherlands.
-
A period of compromise known as "unionism" follows: a fragile alliance between conservative Catholics and liberals.
-
This union allows two visions to coexist:
- The Catholics obtain freedom of education.
- The liberals obtain rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of conscience and democracy.
-
The founder of the ULB, Théodore Verhaegen, was a liberal Catholic favourable to these compromises.
4. The birth of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
- Founded in 1834 by the liberal party and freemasonry in reaction to the re-establishment of the Catholic University of Leuven.
- The aim: to create a form of teaching not subordinate to the Church, promoting freedom of thought and critical research.
- The ULB becomes the symbol of this will to intellectual independence in the face of religious control.
5. La radicalisation des camps
-
5. The radicalisation of the camps
-
From the 1840s and 1850s the unionist compromise collapses:
- The Catholics become radicalised under the influence of the ultramontane current (strict submission to the pope).
- The liberals react by becoming more anticlerical, forcefully claiming intellectual freedom.
-
Free inquiry becomes a central demand in this polarised context.
6. Free inquiry: a fundamental principle at the ULB
- In 1854 Verhaegen states that free inquiry is essential to democracy, to scientific research and to the education of elites.
- It becomes the founding principle of teaching and research at the ULB.
- This is a modern free inquiry, inherited from the idéologues, far broader than that of the 16th century over the biblical texts.
Conclusion: Free inquiry, widened by the idéologues, becomes a genuine political and intellectual doctrine in Belgium. The Université libre de Bruxelles embodies this will to defend critical thinking, freedom of conscience and independence from religious powers, at the very heart of higher education.
